Episode 053 Be Impeccable With Your Word

URL:    http://www.julieannsullivan.com/be-impeccable-with-your-word/

Summary

This episode of Mere Mortals Unite explores a super power solution contained in the book, The Four Agreements, by Don Miquel Ruiz. The four agreements are simple, not easy and their impact is deep. This episode looks at how to be impeccable with your word. The word impeccable means without sin in Latin. The agreement deals with doing no harm with the words that come out of your mouth. It also includes the thoughts in your head, as the avenue of how you talk to yourself. As human beings in our current society, life is sometimes too busy for you to  really think about what you say. However, making time to think before you speak makes a profound difference in your life and the lives around you.

You’ll discover:

  • The power of the words you use
  • The danger of speaking untruths
  • The importance of thinking before you speak
  • The effect you can have with your own self-talk
  • The reward of being accountable
  • Three important questions to ask yourself first
    • Is it true:
    • Is it kind?
    • Will it help?

Episode 052: Let’s Get Along - Candy Whirley

URL: http://www.julieannsullivan.com/lets-get-along-candy-whirley/

My guest today is Candy Whirley, whose superpower is helping people get along better. She’s written a book called It Takes 4 to Tango, which describes people as either chameleons, lions, lambs, or owls. Based on research from other assessment tools, Candy came up with a way to make it fun to find out who you are and how you relate to the rest of the world. Relationships are so important in all facets of our lives.

I talk with Candy about the inherent characteristics and how important it is to find out what those are in yourself and others. Whether you’re looking to work better with your coworkers, your significant other, or your grandchildren, Candy gives two steps to build stronger communication. First, identify what type you are, accept that, and analyze if those that surround you are alike or different. And then, find ways to adapt to the situation. If you’re a lamb and your boss is a lion, you can wish all day your boss would change, but a better outcome would be created by respecting the differences. Candy will help you learn how to treat people in the manner they need to be treated. Listen, learn and then go out and make a difference.

Bio: Candy Whitley has been a leader and business owner for fifteen years. She is a member of the National Speakers Association, receiving CSP this year, as well as a volunteer for Harvesters International in South Sudan. She graduated Cum Laude as an undergrad in Speech Communications and has a Master's degree in Management. Candy was an NFL Cheerleader for three years with the Kansas City Chiefs, and is the author of several books, including It Takes 4 to Tango. She is an expert at building, fixing, and forming relationships in the workplace by exploring personality and generational differences.

You’ll discover:

  • Specific benefits that come from having good relationships.
  • Why the personality you experience under stress is truly who you are.
  • Engaging stories about how having better relationships can make you more successful, and why it’s about adapting to others.
  • Why it’s more profitable to care about people.
  • Practical steps to improve your relationships.

Meridith shares some valuable skills on making your time beneficial by not placing the focus only on yourself. This power of connection doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Meridith says you have to be intentional, and she gives a number of great ideas about doing that. Some of the easiest actions you can take can also help you reap the greatest rewards. You gotta work it, though, and Meridith tells you how.

Episode 047 If Only...

URL:    http://www.julieannsullivan.com/if-only/

Summary

This episode of Mere Mortals Unite explores the super power solution of shutting down the “IF ONLY” mentality. You can go through life believing if you just had different circumstances, then you could be happy or successful. Or, you can be accountable for how you act, react and feel about the life you are living.

You can take responsibility to change what you don’t like and learn to accept what you cannot change. You can learn to enhance that which is working well and let go of what’s not.  Sometimes when you think it would be better, IF ONLY, that's an opportunity to learn about your own inner workings. It all begins with being self aware when your mind slips into this chasm.  Then you can change that behavior and take back the power that you give away.

It’s not about the pursuit of happiness, but rather being happy in the pursuit.

You’ll discover:

  • Challenges of discovering your own IF ONLY attitude
  • How dissatisfaction can impede success in the moment
  • Realizing what is an unrealistic desire
  • How to recognize when you are thinking, IF ONLY
  • The success that comes with taking responsibility for your life
  • Quick tips to change the behavior of dissatisfaction

URL: http://www.julieannsullivan.com/choose-to-be-an-optimist-beth-caldwell/

On this episode of Mere Mortals Unite, we interview Beth Caldwell. She was my very first mentor and continues to teach me as our friendship has grown. Beth says that being an optimistic person gives you better bounce back ability. In addition, being an optimist is attractive and draws people to you. It’s a quality that can shine through to draw friends and clients alike to want to know more about who you are. Natural optimists can also see what others are capable of even before they do. Optimists are realists, too. They have fears like anyone else. Beth delves into fear and how it makes you freeze and stop doing what your passion wants you to do. One way out, Beth says, is to ask yourself, “What’s the best possible outcome for today?” So what do you do when life doesn’t work out? Beth’s got some great ideas.

You’ll discover:

  • Several benefits of being an optimist.
  • What Beth learned about conquering fear when she established her leadership academy.
  • Why Beth says that the greatest problem with people today is that they are afraid of what people will think of them.

  • Actionable steps for increasing your optimism.

Episode 043: Humor is a Super Power - Lenny Ravich

URL: http://www.julieannsullivan.com/humor-is-a-super-power-lenny-ravich/

On this episode of Mere Mortals Unite, I talk to my dear friend Lenny Ravich all the way from Israel. In Lenny’s own words, he was born at a very young age, so it won’t be any surprise that his superpower is humor. It’s not so much about making other people laugh, but about finding the humor in everyday life. As he puts it, humor greases the hinges of life to make it more fun. As a teacher, being funny was not considered to be a good attribute of his teaching skills. Now research tells us that when people have fun, they learn more and retain information longer. Lenny is so glad that at 80 years old he’s finally being validated. He’s got some great tips to bring more humor into your everyday activities. Listen up and take a few notes.

You’ll discover:

  • What Lenny told a man who asked what he would do if he only had five minutes left to live.
  • Why Lenny calls humor the “red cape” and why you should take it with you wherever you go.
  • The rituals Lenny uses to keep humor at the forefront of his life.
  • Why there is nothing more spiritual than a good laugh.
  • What you can learn from Viktor Frankl, who chose to have a good attitude despite being in a concentration camp.
  • Steps to expand the humorous way you see the world.

Decisions, Leadership, Relationships, Teamwork, Action

Episode 29: Right Decision, First Time - Annette Dubrouillet

URL: http://www.julieannsullivan.com/right-decision-first-time-annette-dubrouillet/

On this episode of Mere Mortals Unite, we interview Annette Dubrouillet, who has a company called Decision Makers. She shares valuable information on what we need to know to make a good decision. Are you a close-ended decider or an open-ended decider? Find out because it makes a difference. Annette shares what to look for in decision drivers, which might be personalities in the process or past experience. Both of these can get in the way of making an informed and thoughtful decision. Don’t get caught up in the syndrome of, “But we’ve always done it this way.” Join us as Annette assists YOU in making the right decision the first time.

You’ll discover:

  • How Annette describes her superpower.
  • Why a good leader doesn’t just focus on what decision should be, but how the decision should be made (i.e. an opportunity to build teamwork and learn to communicate).
  • Four steps to making better decisions.
  • The #1 reason why nothing gets done after a decision is made.

Formulas for controlling your open-ended or closed-ended decision making styles:

If you are an Open-Ended Decider:
1. Set a limit for the maximum number of options you will consider, using what you think to be a low number. Give yourself an actual number, don’t just say, “I won’t consider too many options.” Be specific, “I will consider no more than three options.”
2. Set a maximum time limit for your decision. Again, be specific, not just, “I’ll decide quickly.”  But make the time frame realistic. If you’re deciding on a new job, don’t say you’ll decide within ten minutes. A situation like that would be more of a one- to two-week decision.

If you are a Closed-Ended Decider:
1. Set a limit to the minimum number of options you will consider, using what you think to be a high number. Give yourself an actual number, don’t just say, “I will consider several options.” Be specific, “I will consider no fewer than four options.”
2. Set a minimum time limit for your decision. Again, be specific, not just, “I won’t decide too quickly.” But make the time frame realistic. If you’re deciding about applying for a grant for your organization that has a deadline of next week, you have to factor in how long it will take to create the grant application. You can’t postpone your decision until the day before the application is due.
